{About Midwifery}
The midwifery model of care includes:
Respectful Treatment gentle, nurturing care that respects you, your family, your beliefs, and your decisions about your maternity care.
Personal Attention prenatal visits that allow plenty of time for questions and answers. 30-60 minutes for each appointment is common.
Safe Care Studies have shown that for a low-risk mother, maternity care provided by a trained, experienced midwife is a safe option. Midwife-assisted births have much lower rates of intervention, such as forceps use and cesarean sections. The midwife consults with a physician whenever a medical condition occurs that could create a problem for the mother and/or baby. In Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, over 70% of births are attended by midwives. These countries have lower infant and maternal mortality rates, fewer cesarean births, and lower health care costs than any other countries in Europe or North America.
Cost-Effective Care It is estimated that $13-$20 billion a year could be saved in health care costs by developing midwifery care, demedicalizing childbirth, and encouraging breast feeding.
Plenty of Information discussion and education about nutrition, pregnancy, birth, and breast feeding are an ongoing part of your care. Information about tests, procedures or treatments is reviewed so that you may make informed choices about your maternity care.
Appropriate Monitoring regular and thorough check-ups and monitoring throughout pregnancy, during labor, and after the birth. You will be referred to other healthcare specialists or to a different birth setting if necessary.
Confidence in Your Body no routine treatments or timelines that can interfere with your body's healthy process of giving birth. Midwives provide support for doing the work of giving birth and trust your body's ability to give birth.
Natural Techniques for Comfort an emotionally safe environment, encouragement, massage, relaxation, hydrotherapy, and position changes are very effective pain relievers during labor, without side effects for mother or baby.
A Care Provider Who Stays With You attentive care throughout the labor and birth by the same care providers that you have seen during your pregnancy. Follow up care after the birth and help with breast feeding is also provided.

Midwifery care can be provided by Jessica and her team in either a home or birth center setting. Several other midwives will accompany Jessica to the birth location of your choice.

{Water Birth}

Water birth is growing in popularity and has always been very effective and safe in reducing the discomfort of childbirth. Rental tubs are available to your family if needed.

Water has long been acknowledged as a comforting place to be during times of physical discomfort as well as giving one a feeling of "weightlessness". During labor and birth, both mom and baby feel the support of the water and enjoy its ease. During birth, the differential pressure between inside the uterus and outside the uterus is balanced by mom's tummy being submerged in water. The reduced pressure makes birth gentler for both mom and baby. As a baby's head emerges, the glottis (back of the baby's throat) automatically closes so no water enters and then when the baby's face comes in contact with the air, baby breathes.

{About Labor Assistants/Doula Services}

The term doula is derived from the Greek word doulos, loosely translated to mean woman servant. Today a doula is commonly known as a woman who is educated in childbirth issues and experienced in labor support. A birth doula accompanies a new mother and her partner through birth and the early postpartum period. She provides physical and emotional support, comfort techniques, assistance in gathering information, and an objective viewpoint and advocacy. A doula nurtures and cares for the expectant mother and her partner.

A doula is NOT a replacement for the father or partner; rather she lends support, helping him or her to lovingly support the laboring woman to the fullest capacity. Having Jessica as your Labor Assistant/Doula will be granting you the best of both worlds! Jessica believes every woman is to be granted the right to birth as she wishes. As Jessica is midwifery trained, she is not limited to what other doulas are. Jessica can provide constant labor monitoring, with a Doppler {hand held ultrasound} Vitals {Blood pressure, Heart rate, Respiratory rate, and Temperature}.

The presence of a doula during labor and delivery has profound positive effects on both the mom and baby.

Studies show that using a doula may decrease:
Cesaerean - 50%
Length of Labor - 25%
Use of Pitocin - 50%
Use of Epidural - up to 60%
Use of Forcepts - 34%

In addition, most women who use a doula report:
A decrease in anxiety
Lower incidence of Post Partum Depression
Increased satisfaction with their birth experience
